Maternity sessions

"To be pregnant is to be vitally alive, thoroughly woman, and distressingly inhabited. Soul and spirit are stretched – along with body – making pregnancy a time of transition, growth, and profound beginnings" ~ Anne Christian Buchanan

Preparing for Your Maternity Session

Mama, it is time for you to pamper yourself! this session is all about you and the beautiful baby you are carrying. of course we also want to include dad and any siblings, but you are the star of the show today! I understand fully that it can be hard, since you have a little person in there making it hard to sleep, and even breathe. give yourself permission to feel beautiful in your own skin during this exciting stage of your life. Now is a perfect time to give yourself a pretty manicure. its possible your hands will be in several poses so keep that in mind.

When to Schedule

It is best to schedule your maternity session between 32 and 36 weeks along. now we all know we cannot control mother nature and babies come when they are good and ready, or sometimes earlier. i personally scheduled mine for 33 weeks. i had it scheduled for a few weeks earlier but i didn't think my bump was poppin' enough so I requested to push the date back a little further, and I was happy I did.

What Time of Day?

The best light for photography is in the last few hours of sunlight before sunset. this all depends on the time of year we are in, and I can help you determine the best times. However, I know that everyone is busier than ever these days. we can hold a session during a different time of the day, this is just my preference for the breathtaking golden light that is available before sunset.

What to Bring

this session can be simple & Sweet or elegant & bold. perhaps you have an heirloom family quilt you want included or a special stuffed animal for your new baby, please bring them and we can incorporate them. Other items such as baby booties, ultrasound photos, baby blankets, handmade signs, or a favorite children's book can all be included if you desire.

What to Wear

i want you to wear clothing that expresses your personal style best and you feel comfortable and beautiful in. i do, however, have some suggestions and guidelines that will create the best possible photographs. you really can't go wrong with a flowy maxi dress, they are comfortable and as a bonus are able to create movement in your portraits. alternately a bodycon style dress will accentuate all of your beautiful curves and that baby bump! for a more casual look, a top that flatters your figure and hugs your bump with a pair of jeans and boots would be lovely, you can dress it up or down with a cardigan, BELT and accessories. FOR MEN SWEATERS, CARDIGANS, BLAZERS OR BUTTON DOWNS WITH SLEEVES ROLLED UP OR DOWN LOOK GREAT WITH DRESS SLACKS OR DARK WASH JEANS. consider what location type you are INTERESTED in as well. are you LOOKING got an urban setting? Or would you prefer to be surrounded by nature? these can play into your choice of clothing as well. please keep in mind your location when considering colors, as you don't want to blend into the background and get lost! concerning colors, I would suggest simple patterns or neutral solids in colors that lend themselves to the season. as far as coordinating with your spouse, it will look extra sharp if you keep one person in a pattern (if a pattern is desired), and the other in a solid, and if one person is wearing a bold color, the other should be in more neutral clothing. in addition, consider adding some visual interest using textures, such as lace, faux fur, seersucker, wool or chunky knits. if you would like multiple outfits and locations we can work that in, i would just suggest a longer session for multiple locations and outfit changes.

some color options based on the season:

Fall: Plum, rust, marigold, pumpkin, navy, mustard, merlot, teal , burgundy, Emerald green, chocolate brown, gold

Winter: ruby, crimson, grape, wine, royal blue, cobalt, emerald or kelly green, steel grey, dusty rose, gold, dusty blue

Spring: lilac, blush, sky blue, sage, daffodil, mint, ivory or off white

Summer: coral, mint, watermelon, TURQUOISE, blush, chambray, ivory or off white

ONE FINAL NOTE ON COLORS TO CONSIDER. iF YOU WILL BE HANGING PRINTS OR CANVASES IN YOUR HOME, THINK ABOUT THE COLOR SCHEME OF YOUR HOME AND HOW YOUR CLOTHING COLOR CHOICES IN THE IMAGES WILL FIT WITHIN THAT SCHEME.

Misc.

wear comfortable shoes, whatever that looks like for you! I would suggest avoiding large lettering or graphics on t-shirt. if you wear glasses regularly they probably will be missed if you remove them for photos. however transition lenses can sometimes create an issue with outdoor sessions. FOR LITTLE GIRLS A DIAPER COVER OR SHORTS UNDER A DRESS HELPS AVOID THE DIAPER FROM BEING PHOTOGRAPHED. JUST A FEW MORE ITEMS i SUGGEST TO LEAVE AT HOME: NEON CLOTHING, WHITE T-SHIRTS, and tennis shoes if at all possible.
